Religious buildings
BASILICA OF SAN FEDELEThis church was built in the 12th century, on the site once occupied by the early
Christian Church of Santa Eufemia, and has an unusual trefoil plan. After frequent
restorations and modifications, the façade was totally rebuilt together with a
bell tower at the beginning of this century. Inside the church you will see three
communicating aisles with round arches; the central apse flanked by smaller apses
and a double loggia with columns topped with refined capitals; the walls, covered
with 14th and 15th century frescoes, 17th and 18th century paintings.
SANCTUARY OF ANNUNCIATA OR CROCEFISSO
It was built towards the end of the 16th century on the site of a previous oratory,
dating from the 13th century. Its façade was designed by L. Canonica (1.762-1.844)
and modified by L. Fontana (1.863). The façade portal is framed by statues, which
lean out for four niches encircling the pediment formed by the group of the Annunciata
by Giuseppe Bayer. Its interior features a sole and big nave. Flanked by a 17th
century chapel, containing the bones of plague victims, it offers a precious wooden
cross (probably dating from the 14th century), frescoes by C. Carloni and of the
school of Morazzone, stuccoworks by D. Carloni and stucco statues, dating from
the 18th century.
CHURCH OF SANT'AGOSTINO
The church (14th century), is the only example of ogival Cistercian church in Como. After having been enlarged and embellished in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was modified in 1.773 and restored completely in 1.957. The spired facade contans a rosette, the portal and several windows; in the lunette, you can see a fresco made in the 16th century. Its interior features a nave and two aisles, a triumphal arch preceeding the presbitery, characterized by wooden beams covering the central nave and ribbed vaults above the lateral aisles.
Painting by Recchis, D. Crespi and Morazzone can be seen together with frescoes of the 14th and 15th centuries. In the adjacent cloister there is a 15th century fresco.
